Communities Come Together to Support a Cure - 9/18/2009
Foodland and IGA stores across Ontario raised $129,142.33 through their Communities for a Cure program, benefiting the Canadian Cancer Society
Foodland and IGA stores across Ontario proved for the sixth summer in a row that together, they are strong in the fight against cancer. Through their annual Communities for a Cure fundraising program, Foodland and IGA raised $129,142.33 for the Canadian Cancer Society.
“This summer we celebrated our sixth anniversary of Communities for a Cure,” said Robin Downs, Director Marketing, Sobeys Ontario. “The phenomenal effort put forth from all of our stores, vendors and most importantly, our customers brings our six year total fundraising contribution to the Canadian Cancer Society to $1,132.343,20! This truly is an amazing and fantastic feat and we are proud to support such a worthy organization.”
What began as small, fundraising barbeques hosted by Foodland and IGA store operators to help raise much-needed funds and awareness for the fight against cancer, Communities for a Cure has since grown into one of the largest third party fundraising events benefiting the Canadian Cancer Society of Ontario. In 2008, Communities for a Cure surpassed the five-year fundraising goal of $1 million. As Communities for a Cure continues into its seventh year next summer, teams hope to build on the momentum and push towards the $2 million mark.
“The extraordinary results from Communities for a Cure would not have been possible without the support and enthusiasm shown by all Foodland and IGA store operators and staff,” said the Hon. Susan E. Whelan, CEO of the Canadian Cancer Society, Ontario Division. “The time, effort and passion put into Communities for a Cure is truly inspiring and is a great example of what makes Foodland and IGA stores more than just a convenient place to shop. They are 100 per cent dedicated to serving our local communities and committed to help make cancer history.”
“The activities we host during Communities for a Cure are more than just fundraising events,” said Mike Carter, Franchisee, Milverton Foodland. “They unite our customers and our community together and allow us to honor those among us who have been affected by cancer. I am proud to announce that because of Milverton’s overwhelming and continued support, we were able to raise an outstanding $11,389.00 for the Canadian Cancer Society this year.”
All proceeds raised from Communities for a Cure will be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society to support local programs and services across the province as well as to raise funds for life-saving cancer research. Funds raised in communities throughout Ontario stay in the area in which they were raised.
